Municipal Stormwater Inspectors visit commercial and industrial businesses to help them understand and comply with stormwater pollution control requirements.
Goals Of The Stormwater Inspection Process
- To prevent and eliminate pollutant sources from being discharged to stormwater conveyances.
- To protect Bay Area creeks, waterways, the Pacific Ocean, and the San Francisco Bay.
- To promote public water quality awareness through education, outreach, and enforcement as needed.
General Stormwater Inspection Process (may vary by municipality)
- Facility walk-through inspection to verify appropriate Best Management Practices (BMPs) are being implemented on site and that there is no potential for any pollutants to be discharged offsite or to waters of the state.
- Inspection report write-up documenting all deficiencies found during the inspection and what the required corrective actions are to come into compliance with all relevant regulations by the given compliance deadline.
- Review of correspondence and follow-up visit if necessary to determine if the facility has completed corrective actions and is in compliance with applicable stormwater regulations.
- Additional enforcement actions, including referral to other agencies, if required.
Is Your Industrial Facility Subject To The State General Industrial Stormwater Permit Requirements?
In addition to complying with local stormwater ordinances, manufacturing facilities and certain other industrial facilities are required to notify the State Water Resource Control Board that they understand they are subject to the general permit and commit to identifying and implementing BMPs needed at their facility to prevent stormwater pollution to the maximum extent practicable. The State Water Resources Control Board has some good guidance for who is subject to the State Industrial General Permit and preparing a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) that you can find by clicking here.
