Habitat Restoration at Tunitas Creek Beach

May 27, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Tunitas Creek is a beautiful spread of coastline featuring stunning ocean views. It serves as vital habitat for the threatened Western Snowy Plover. Please join us as we remove invasive species endangering their home.

LOGISTICS AND ACCESSIBILITY :

  • We will begin with a steep, 1/2 mile walk down a paved road to our restoration site. We will then use shovels to dig out deeply-rooted invasive dune grass, as well as hand pulling sea rocket and ice plant encroaching onto the beach.
  • No restrooms or potable water will be available Digging out dune grass is hard work, so we recommend that you bring at least one personal water bottle for each member of your group.
  • We ask that you wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty for your protection and comfort. Our work area is fairly exposed and can be quite windy, so be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes.
  • Sunscreen, snacks, and hats are also great to have on hand. (If weather conditions are deemed too extreme, this event may be canceled and we will reach out to participants by email.)
    • Please note, Tunitas Creek Beach and its parking lot are currently closed to the general public behind a locked gate. Stay tuned for a followup email describing how to get into the park for our event.

A reminder email with more detailed instructions on the day’s activities and where to meet will also be sent in advance of the event. We look forward to seeing you in the parks!

If signing up as a family or a group, please adjust the number of volunteer sign-ups according to the number of volunteers in your party when filling out your registration form. Groups of eight or more must contact clandon@smcgov.org at least seven days in advance to register.

Volunteers under the age of 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian.

  • Youth under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Our programs are recommended for ages 10 and up. Please reach out to us if you’d like to bring children younger than 10 years to volunteer so we can plan ahead for all-ages projects on occasion.
