Extreme Heat and Concurrent Hazards: Lessons Learned (Online)

November 10, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

The Climate Ready SMC Extreme Heat Task Force invites residents, city staff, community groups and policy makers to a virtual discussion about the unprecedented summer of 2020 when we experienced concurrent multiple disasters. We aim to capture the lessons learned from the experience of multiple high heat days while also dealing simultaneously with a pandemic, wildfires, poor air quality, and sporadic power shutoffs. We also would like to identify next steps for the task force to ensure we can support stakeholders and to help our communities become more resilient to climate-change-related extreme weather and better protect vulnerable residents. For example, green infrastructure practices such as tree canopy and green roofs help reduce the urban heat island effect.

We will hear about high heat protocols and response efforts from the Office of Emergency Services, San Mateo County Health, the City of Redwood City, a North Fair Oaks community group. Following that, we will gather in small groups to discuss heat and other hazards preparedness, promising practices for dealing with multiple hazards, and lessons learned.
