Joint Climate Action Plan Workshop – The Coastside Climate: working together to improve Coastside life and combat climate change (English and Spanish)

October 15, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The County of San Mateo and the City of Half Moon Bay are teaming up and looking for your feedback on both of their Community Climate Action Plans. These County and City plans will set goals and strategies to reduce the pollution that causes climate change and increase the quality of life for all residents.

Do you live in Half Moon Bay, Montara, Moss Beach, Princeton By-the-Sea, El Granada, Miramar, La Honda, San Gregorio, or Pescadero? We want to hear your ideas, concerns, and priorities for improving life in coastal communities, reducing pollution sources contributing to climate change, and building resilient coastal communities!

Please join the City of Half Moon Bay and County of San Mateo for The Coastside Climate: working together to improve Coastside life and combat climate change. *By attending you’ll enter a raffle for a gift card to a local restaurant or grocery store.

FAQ

What’s it about?

The County of San Mateo and the City of Half Moon Bay Climate Action Plans provide an opportunity to improve life on the coast, reduce the pollution that causes climate change and develop community solutions that can address multiple (ie not just climate) community challenges and opportunities.

What do the plans do?

These plans identify and prioritize the steps the City and County will take to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (pollution) that are already changing our beloved Coast, reducing fog and increasing heat and risk of drought; increasing the rate of erosion and sea level rise, and increasing our risk for wildfire and flooding. These reductions are needed both to protect our home and also to meet state climate goals. The plans will be used to guide investments and seek funding to improve life on the Coast and reduce the pollution we generate through our everyday activities.

Why should I get involved?

The City and County want these plans to be informed by a community-based vision for improving life on the Coast. You don’t have to know anything about Climate Change, just bring your concerns, priorities and vision and we can find the connections together through small group discussions (in English and Spanish?).

Community members who have participated so far have shared great ideas and we don’t want to miss out on yours. Many residents may not come with specific ideas (and that’s ok!), they just came to the conversation with their own experience as a Coastside resident and came up with ideas through the conversation. Others had already been thinking about ways to reduce pollution and brought those ideas. Here’s some examples of topics your neighbors have weighed in on:

How to reduce traffic jams, ways to reduce household electricity costs, help Coastside businesses and farms, and reduce pollution and provide energy during Public Safety Power Shutoffs. You can also play an important role letting us know about barriers that get in the way of community improvements and of community members who want to reduce pollution but can’t afford to or don’t know where to start.
