Huddart Park Habitat Restoration Volunteer Event

March 18, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Huddart Park is a beautiful mosaic of redwood forest, chaparral, and meadows that provide diverse habitats for many native plants and animals. The park’s recreational trail system showcases the beauty and ecological complexity Huddart has to offer to hikers and equestrians alike.

Unfortunately, our park’s habitat is threatened by invasive plant species that outcompete local species for light and nutrients. Come enjoy the spring wildflowers and learn more about our local ecosystems as you help us to care for our native species on Saturday, March 18th as we remove invasive weeds from Huddart!

LOGISTICS AND ACCESSIBILITY :

  • We will begin with a 1/4 mile interpretive walk down gently sloped dirt trail. We will then work to remove French Broom plants from a gently sloped hillside. Weeding will likely include bending and kneeling and/or using heavy prying tools called weed wrenches. We will provide tools, gloves, and “kneelers” (foam pads used to cushion knees during gardening or habitat restoration.)
  • We ask that you wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty for your protection and comfort. Sunscreen, snacks, hats, and layers are also great to have on hand in case the weather gets warm or cold. If weather conditions are deemed too extreme, this event may be canceled and we will reach out to participants by email.
  • There a restroom and potable water will be available at our restoration site, but we still recommend that you bring a personal water bottle for each member of your group.

A reminder email with more detailed instructions on the day’s activities and where to meet will also be sent in advance of the event. We look forward to seeing you in the parks!

Please direct questions and comments for this event to Charlie Landon at clandon@smcgov.org.

If signing up as a family or a group, please adjust the number of volunteer sign-ups according to the number of volunteers in your party when filling out your registration form. Groups of eight or more must contact clandon@smcgov.org at least seven days in advance to register.

Volunteers under the age of 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian.

  • Youth under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Our programs are recommended for ages 10 and up. Please reach out to us if you’d like to bring children younger than 10 years to volunteer, as we can plan ahead for all-ages projects on occasion.
