Medicine Disposal Program:
Recent research by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows trace amounts of medicines in many of the Country’s waterways. Much of this is due to the disposal of unused medicines into the sanitary sewer system which eventually leads to our waterways such as streams, creeks, rivers, reservoirs, bays and beyond.
One thing you can do to help is to properly dispose of your unused perescription medicines, over the counter medicines and vitamins. In San Mateo County, you can dispose of this waste at law enforcement agencies listed below.

Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos accepts old/unused non-controlled medicines. NOTE: This location only accepts over the counter medications and some prescriptions that include but are not limited to ibuprofen, cough medicine, vitamins and allergy medications. The medicine can come in liquid or pill form, or pill punch packs.
